Sparks Drop One to Sacramento Monarchs, 87-79

27 turnovers led to the loss against the Sacramento Monarchs Thursday night.

Candace Parker led the Sparks with only 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Monarchs defense stopped the rookie diva from getting close to her average output. Parker scored 10 of her 14 points in the 3rd quarter.

“We were hoping she wasted all those points the night before and didn’t have any left for us,” Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro said.

Lisa Leslie finished with just 7 points and 4 rebounds.

The Monarchs are tied with the Houston Comets for last place in the Western Conference, 9-11, winning just 3 of their first 7 games.

The Sparks took the lead by halftime, 39-36 with Parker and Marie Ferdinand-Harris scoring 8 points and Shannon Bobbitt adding 7.

Sacramento continued it’s strong defensive pressure into the 3rd quarter, limiting the Sparks to just 3 points in the first 8 minutes.

The Monarchs took a 5 point lead, 65-60 going into the final quarter, with back-to-back 3’s from Kara Lawson.

“I felt like I needed to be aggressive in the second half and got some open 3-pointers,” said Lawson, who had another 3-pointer early in the fourth. “That layup in transition got me going. It was a great day.”

Parker looked sluggish compared to her career high 40 point game against the Houston Comets Wednesday night.
